Biography

PROFILE: Sarah Santos grew up around politics in Brazil, a country rife with corruption and bureaucracy. Since it was the norm, she did not understand how much these factors hindered the population’s ability to move towards progress. “Only when I moved to America were my eyes opened to the severity of the situation.” Since then, Sarah has been inspired to pursue a career in international law.
In addition to her involvement in multiple organizations and activities on campus, Sarah took on extra work last year to help support her family. While her health has suffered at times from the stress, the most difficult part has been not having more time to challenge herself intellectually.
INSPIRATION: Sarah’s parents have influenced her in a profound way. “While we have been through difficult times in every aspect of our lives—financial, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and social—it is their perseverance, integrity, and humility that have formed my character and helped me fight each obstacle in the way of my dreams.”
ASPIRATION: Sarah is pursuing a double major in political science and economics in order to go to law school and specialize in international law. One dream is to work as a diplomat for the United Nations. Ultimately, she hopes to have an impact on Brazil’s economic policies.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: As Vice President of communications of her college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Sarah created a number of panels and presentations including a popular investment workshop on behalf of the Business Professional of America. She also lent her leadership skills to community efforts including beach clean-ups and the Little Learners College Program for environmental awareness.
ACCOLADES: Sarah was a student representative on the legislative council committee and the president’s cabinet meeting at Broward Community College.
INTERESTING FACT: Sarah shadowed a state senator and her community college president as part of the Competitive Edge shadowing program.
