“The difficulties in my life truly are gifts because they have developed within me the strength, maturity, and perseverance I need to succeed in life.”
PROFILE: Sarah Holland is a tireless leader on campus with such a passion for learning that she has been known to go back and reedit papers that already earned her an A.
Sarah began working and supporting herself at the age of 15. The first in her family to earn a high school diploma, she attended cosmetology school while working two jobs. By 22, she had become determined to pursue a college degree. While attending community college, she has learned to appreciate another part of herself. “Since I grew up without my biological father, who was Mexican, I never felt connected to, or appreciated my ethnicity until I read the literature, heard the stories, and studied the art of various Latin American cultures.”
INSPIRATION: A community of supportive families at her church inspired Sarah. “Most of the parents home-schooled their children, and as I spent time with them I saw what an amazing education they were obtaining. It instilled in me a passion for learning. I made the decision to further my education and begin my college career.”
ASPIRATION: Sarah hopes to become an entrepreneur and to also establish a foundation to help others. “I want my business to be run with morals and integrity, and I hope to give back to others in my community by using a portion of my profits to help other new business owners build their companies.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: As a youth leader in her church, Sarah mentors young women and creates and performs in skits that teach biblical lessons.
ACCOLADES: As president of her Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Sarah recruited new members by advertising and introducing icebreakers, games, and food. Her efforts helped the chapter double in size. She was also on the President’s List and National Dean’s List.
