“It had been nearly eighteen years since I had been in a classroom. I found the transition wasn’t hard because I had a strong desire to succeed.”
PROFILE: Born to a teenage single mother, Grady struggled through his own teens, often having to fend for himself. By the time he graduated from high school, he discovered that the money in the college fund he had been saving since 2nd grade was gone. He spent years following high school working a plethora of manual labor jobs, never giving up hope. Today he is a happily married new father. In finally going after his college dreams, he has emerged as a leader and favorite tutor on campus. He was even approached to take over as editor of his community college newspaper, a task he took on with relish.
INSPIRATION: “In 2005, I married the greatest woman in the world. She supported my dreams and could see the potential in me.” Grady says his decision to pursue college so many years after leaving high school was inspired by a question from his wife: “What do you want to do?”
ASPIRATION: Grady looks forward to a time when he can wake up and feel happy to go to his job. “I chose computer animation as my field of study because it allows me to be creative by taking ideas and bringing them to life. Since I was a child I have enjoyed drawing, and later I found a gift for creating storylines.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: As President of his Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Grady has been an active volunteer leading the charge on such initiatives as Books for Africa, Adopt a Troop, and World AIDS Day. He also volunteers as a tutor in the digital media lab.
ACCOLADES: Grady’s honors include President’s List and National Dean’s List, Student of the Year, and All-Maine Academic Team.
