“The day I was diagnosed with a life threatening disease, I had to decide at that moment if I was going to stand up and fight or allow this illness to consume me. I chose to stand up and live the best life possible.”
PROFILE: Katelynn DeLuca always knew she wanted to be a teacher. “Education is a way for individuals to grow beyond their current situation.” She realized she wanted to study and teach English after taking a literature class in college. “The literature we read just spoke to me in a way that I had never experienced before. It was like the authors were explaining my life to me.”
Katelynn’s quest for higher education has not been without obstacles. Prior to her first year of college, her mother was diagnosed with a rare illness that resulted in the removal of her large intestine. Katelynn and her brother were also diagnosed with this same illness and have undergone intestine removal surgery.
Dealing with these challenging medical circumstances has required a difficult balance between academic, work, and family life. At one point, Katelynn nearly dropped out of school to work fulltime and care for her family, but she decided to continue her education and “turn a negative into a positive.”
INSPIRATION: Katelynn has been inspired by the unconditional support of her mother and a special professor. She has also been inspired by the outpouring of support from her local community in Riverhead. During her family’s hardships, the community held fundraisers to help with medical costs. “The best I can do is earn their gifts, to show my community how much I value their generosity. I can do this by working hard, earning good grades, and eventually reaching my goal of a graduate degree in English, and establishing myself in a teaching career.”
ASPIRATION: Katelynn aspires to earn a Ph.D. in English and teach at the university level.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Katelynn tutors in English and writing at her college. She devotes eight hours a week to helping peers with their writing skills and grammar. She plans to stay on Long Island to give back to her community as a teacher.
ACCOLADES: Katelynn is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She received the Robert Fisher Honors Scholarship and Tara L. Stephans Memorial Scholarship.
INTERESTING FACT: Katelynn coaches the Riverhead High School Girls Basketball Summer League team.
